My new obsession – spiced ruby grapefruit tea. This tea is delicious, a wonderfully warming beverage, packed full with vitamin C. It is simple to create, and gosh darn tasty.
For the past two weeks I have encountered one sickly person after another. People stuffed up with colds, lingering flu and bronchitis. I have sat across from so many undiagnosed illnesses it has become necessary to bolster my immune system, and spiced ruby grapefruit tea is just the ticket.
Grapefruit’s very high levels of vitamin C is exactly what you need to ward off the evils of cold and flu. They’re also very hydrating as they are 90% water.
Spiced ruby grapefruit tea is made up of grapefruits, of course, and also water, allspice berries, cinnamon and honey. You pile them into a small pan, stir while the ingredients heat and serve just before the tea begins to boil. The first sip is like magic. The warm liquid is comforting and healing.
I have recently converted to using Ceylon cinnamon over regular cinnamon – known as cassia cinnamon. I use Ceylon cinnamon to avoid coumarin. Coumarin is thought to be carcinogenic, and with regular use damaging to the liver and kidneys. Ceylon cinnamon is also supposed to have a sweeter taste, but I can’t say that I’ve noticed.
Using Manuka honey helped to round out the flavors in this tea really nicely. Manuka honey is sweeter and richer than many other varieties of honey.
Spiced ruby grapefruit tea is my new best friend, and if you try this recipe, I think it will be your best friend too.
