Sweet and spicy coleslaw is a quick and easy salad that goes with so many meals. You can use any variety of the usual coleslaw ingredients if you like, but I used napa cabbage and radicchio. A great combination of flavors and gives great eye appeal.

You will not be able to get enough of this delicious combination. The slight bitterness of the radicchio is subdued by the nappa cabbage. Agave is added and is the perfect partner for the zing of rice vinegar and red pepper flakes. Salt and pepper and scallions are the seasoning ingredients which add definition and top off a wonderful salad.

The ingredients are not precisely mixed together which means you will experience the flavors in this sweet and spicy coleslaw differently each time you pile some onto your fork.

Fear not, this coleslaw is neither very sweet nor very spicy, it’s just right, and it makes for a great topping element too. Think fish tacos or loaded potatoes crowned with sweet and spicy coleslaw. Yum – right?

The varying flavors of this dish go oh so well with red meat, stewed or fried fish, and grilled meat. You can even top a main course salad with it. I have served this coleslaw in almost every way I described. It’s such an easy dish, a real no brainer and allows me to concentrate on creating a really fabulous main course when feeding my family and friends.

Sweet and Spicy Coleslaw

Ingredients

  • 1 small radicchio sliced thin
  • 2/3 nappa cabbage siced thin
  • 1 scallion sliced thin
  • 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes
  • 1 tsp kosher salt
  • 1 1/2 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tbsp light agave

Equipment & Utensils

  • Large mixing bowl

Instructions

  • Tip washed radicchio and cabbage into mixing bowl and toss until nicely combined.
  • Add scallions, toss once more.
  • Sprinkle red pepper flakes and salt, and toss again.
  • Mix rice vinegar and agave together then drizzle on top and toss, and toss.
  • When you are satisfied that the ingredients are nicely mixed.
  • Serve as desired.
