My mother swears by Guinness as an aid to lethargy. She usually has some in the fridge and whips it out whenever someone says they’ve been feeling rather lackluster or have been diagnosed anemic. Of course, she understands that many people, particularly those who do not drink beer, are unlikely to sup on a Guinness-filled drink, just like that. Instead she magics a frothy glass of Guinness punch as a compromise.

Other than Guinness, of course, Guinness punch consists of a whisked raw egg, condensed milk, vanilla extract, nutmeg and cinnamon. The ingredients are placed in a blender and zapped for 1 minute – that’s it!

Guinness is purported to aid stamina, deliver immune-boosting antioxidants, and has also been used as hangover cure – hair of the dog.

I can assure you, one or two sips of Guinness punch will render you a fan. It’s so tasty, rich and fulfilling. Even if you’re a skeptic of its benefits, it’s no real hardship.

Guinness punch is widely enjoyed in the Caribbean, thus there are many variations. Some islands prefer it without the egg, others add more dairy. Jamaicans are prone to adding Irish Moss, and many islands add a shot of Cognac or Rum. I kept my recipe close to my mother’s. If she’s right, then to enjoy a glass of Guinness punch once in a while is of benefit, and drinking something of benefit that tastes good, makes me happy.
