On a warm day, blueberry mango salsa is a great choice for a side dish. It’s fruity, spicy and can be conjured up in no time. All you have to do is combine mango with blueberries, add jalapeños, scallion and lime juice and et voilà!
It’s marvelous how well these flavors go together. Aside from its obvious fruity taste, this salsa gives a spicy kick and almost serves as a palate cleanser after every bite. It’s an ideal accompaniment to fish.
I featured this blueberry mango salsa in my last post, snapper with spicy mango sauce. The two dishes worked so well together that I guzzled everything down a little too quickly. So quickly that I didn’t notice an errant fish scale on my plate and swallowed it down with everything else. To my horror that flippin fish scale got stuck in the back of my throat.
Don’t worry, I didn’t begin to choke, but I did feel very uncomfortable. I had to get rid of it, and tried to by drinking water, making sure the water splashed the back of my throat. That didn’t work so I ate a piece of bread, and that didn’t work. I then tried to just hawk it up – nope!
Now panic set in. I was worried that the stubborn fish scale would wait until I was asleep and then do its work to snuff me out!
I desperately searched my kitchen for something that might dislodge the enemy. It then occurred to me that I needed something rough to drag away the scale. Luckily, I had some caramelized walnuts from a previous kale pomegranate goat cheese salad recipe. I grabbed a handful and munched on them like my life depended on each crunch. I then chased the nuts with as much water as I could hold in my mouth. Finally, using everything I had available, I said a little prayer to conquer that fish scale, and then swallowed, very slowly.
It was gone! I nearly kicked my feet up in the air let me tell you. A fish scale or bone lodged in throat is no game, and from here on, I will always make sure to have nuts in the house when eating fish.

Blueberry Mango Salsa
Ingredients
- 2 cups mango diced
- 1 cup blueberries
- 1/3 cup jalapeño diced
- 1/4 cup scallion sliced
- 21/2 tbsp lime juice
Equipment & Utensils
- Large bowl
Instructions
- Place mango, blueberries, jalapeños and scallions in a bowl then drizzle with lime juice.
- Toss to mix thoroughly.
- Allow salsa to sit for 10-15 minutes before serving.
