Once summer is over and the nights begin to get cooler I crave a hearty burger. Tasty ground beef, 80% lean, fashioned into a burger, cloaked with complementary flavors and encased in a quality bun. That’s our recipe for today folks, a Hearty Burger with Soppressata. A very filling burger that will likely push your appetite to its limits but leave with you with a smile on your face.

Hearty Burger with Soppressata by Diverse Dinners

This is a simple burger recipe really, with a couple of twists.

  1. The beef patty is flanked by slices of soppressata
  2. Tomatoes are diced and mixed with scallions, tomato ketchup and mustard to create a relish.

The bun is a potato bun, topped with butter lettuce, the beef patty is 8 oz, so not the burger for finicky eaters.

It’s unusual, I know, but a great combination of flavors. If you’re a lover of burgers and also enjoy charcuterie, a Hearty Burger with Soppressata will be just what the doctor ordered.

Finding the ingredients for this burger will be easy. However, you might not have a choice as to whether you use sweet or spicy soppressata. Thankfully, either works fine, so just grab whatever you find first.

If you are unable to find potato buns there are many substitutes, just make sure whichever you choose can stand up to the job of cradling an 8 oz burger and its tasty partners.

This is a juicy burger that requires a quickly thought out eating method. I’ll admit it, it’s a messy meal, but don’t let that put you off, messy can be good.

I don’t usually serve anything alongside this Hearty Burger with Soppressata. It’s hearty, therefore the need for a side is unlikely. Notwithstanding it’s ample portions you might still want to go with a side. If that is that case, I caution you to serve modest portions.

Ingredients

  • 8 oz 80% lean ground beef
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1/4 tsp kosher salt
  • Pinch ground black pepper
  • Touch of cooking oil
  • 1/2 cup tomato diced small
  • 1 tbsp scallions minced
  • 2 tbsp tomato ketchup
  • 1 tbsp wholegrain mustard
  • Potato burger bun
  • 2 slices butter lettuce
  • 2-3 slices sweet or spicy soppressata

Instructions

  • Mix together ground beef, egg yolk and salt and pepper.
  • Form ground beef mixture into a patty, making sure the center of the patty is less thick than the edges as the center of the patty will swell to a greater degree than the outer area when cooking.
  • Cook burger on the grill, in a grill pan or skillet to required doneness. Use just a touch of cooking oil and allow to rest.
  • While patty is resting, mix together tomatoes, scallion, ketchup and mustard and set aside.
  • Cut the potato bun in half and toast the insides using whichever method you used to cook the burger.
  • To stack the burger, place lettuce on top of base of bun, overlap lettuce as necessary. Place a slice of soppressata on top of lettuce, then place patty on top and then add another layer of soppressatta. Carefully spoon tomatoes on top and then press the top of bun to crown the burger. Use a skewer to keep in place if needed.
